TOKYO (AFP) - US software giant Microsoft will spend nearly seven billion dollars on research and development next year, matching its spending planned for the current year, chief executive Steve Ballmer said.

"We will spend as a company almost seven billion dollars in the next year on R and D," Ballmer said in a speech at Tokyo's prestigious Keio University.

Microsoft Corp. has a budget of 6.9 billion dollars for the current year ending this month, an eight percent increase from the year earlier.
