'''Document Management System (DMS)''' A Document Management System (DMS) in it's simpliest form, is a system introduced to try and facilitate the paperless office ideal and at the same time, cut down time taken to retrieve documents. ==History== Older DMS's would involve copying of paperwork/documents to 16mm or 35mm film using a [[microfilm camera]], processing the films, and then viewing the film reproduction using a [[microfiche viewer]]. Since the advancements in computer technology, documents can now be scanned and saved as computer image files (like tiffs). These files can be written to CD/DVD and viewed using an application viewer. Another alternative to this is to actually have a computer system interact with document management functionality eg. scanning, viewing. These images can be stored in a database like [[SQL Server]]. Other functionality can be added like version control, indexing, full text indexing & workflow. [[InsigniaDocs]] is an example of this type of DMS.
